PRESIDENT's COLUMN

Rotary International's theme for August is "the New Generation". We know that in today's busy world, taking a few minutes to consider the future is very difficult. However, perhaps our greatest obligation to our Rotary organization is to make sure it continues for the next generations.

To consider a world where "service above self" is not known or is not considered a valuable calling is scary and unacceptable to us all. If we take the time now to try to understand the characteristics of the new and next generation we can better communicate with them and better direct our efforts toward the necessary end.

Working with Rota-Runners, Interactors, and Rotaractors and creating new clubs at every opportunity is perhaps the most valuable thing we can do for the long term success of Rotary.

To deny even one of our new generation in our community a chance to experience Rotary seems unforgivable but it does happen in the busy day to day effort of working, raising a family and making a living.

To share the simple but complex idea of service without expectation of reward with someone in one of the "next generations" results in a great gift - perhaps a life changing one - not only for that new generation person but for ourselves as well.
