PRESIDENT's
COLUMN
November is designated by Rotary International as "Foundation Month".
A time for all Rotarians to pause and consider our commitment and support
for this valuable entity in our Rotary life. Whether by making someone
a Paul Harris Fellow or becoming a Benefactor, a positive impact on the
world is made both immediately and for the long term.
A good measure of any man or woman is how far in the future they make
plans for good. From paycheck to paycheck is the first level - a time
measured in days. At a higher level it would be, for example, saving for
your kid's college fund, or establishing a life insurance policy for your
spouse - a time period perhaps measured in decades. Maybe the highest
measure would be to plan and make arrangements for centuries ahead - for
perpetuity. To consider that you and I, ordinary people, ordinary Rotarians,
can make a difference in the world far in the future is a little beyond
our usual day to day thinking. To consider making a contribution to the
health and humanity of the world far in the future when no one will remember
us or know who it was that made that little contribution way back in 2005
is, for our ego, a big turn-off. But all good and proper philosophies
and religions teach that this is the course we should take - not for current
human credit or peer recognition and applause but for an infinitely greater
good - for an infinitely greater Audience.
November 2005 - no better time than now to move ourselves to the highest
level. Arrange a Paul Harris Fellowship. We are watched. The examples
we Rotarians set makes a difference.
