PRESIDENT's COLUMN

Rotary International's theme for July is literacy. This month it is our responsibility to focus on opportunities we individual Rotarians have to promote literacy wherever we are.

It is known in our hearts that Rotarians, bringing a higher level of literacy and awareness to ourselves and to those in our sphere of influence, create a much better world for ourselves and our families. To consider that there are maybe more than 1 in 5 among us who cannot read a road sign, who cannot read a book to their child, who cannot read the newspaper is, or should be, troubling to us.

More troubling to us is the awareness that there are those who make decisions which ultimately impact us who are misled, misguided or may be intentionally limiting their exploration of facts to avoid seeing truth and reality. Kernersville Rotarians have many opportunities to lead the fight to dispel ignorance and illiteracy everywhere in the world. That effort, which has been ongoing in our club, can, with new aggressive members coming on board, continue here in Kernersville Rotary at an even higher level. VS
