PRESIDENT's
COLUMN
I have seen a lot of volunteering by the members of Kernersville Rotary in the last thirty days. We've had the Fourth of July parade, the 5k Run, RYLA, and day to day operations of the club. What awesome work and commitment! Why do people volunteer? Most Rotarians are predisposed to altruism, with Service above Self as their motto. The motivating factors behind volunteering are achievement, power, affiliation, recognition and altruism. What
do volunteers want? To perform a job that is challenging and gives them
an opportunity in which to excel. To have impact, and influence others
with their ideas. To work with other people to build relationships. To
be connected with popular projects so they can enjoy public relations.
How
can we encourage and support our members and embrace diversity? Recognition
of the contribution is a primary means of encouragement. Once we have
asked a member to help, we communicate the expectations and goals and
then give them rein to accomplish the goal in their own way. Criticisms
just don't fit in with the Four Way Test and defuse enthusiasm for volunteering
time and talent. Kernersville Rotary is bursting with enthusiasm, altruism
and achievements, which makes it the perfect venue for the aspiring volunteer!
