Faisalabad, Pakistan Pictures (Int'l Project) - April 2010
The Rotary Clubs of Faisalabad, Pakistan and Kernersville, NC, USA with the aid of co sponsoring clubs from District 7690 (Walnut Cove, Willow Creek, Greensboro Airport and Yadkinville) sponsored a Matching Grant to expand and improve the study environment and study aids for the female students at M.C. Girls Primary School, X Block, Madina Town, Faisalabad, Pakistan.
Pakistan has the highest dropout rate in the world for primary (grade five) students. Some of the reasons include lack of buildings, no furniture, and no desks for students etc, and Madina school was an example of all these shortcomings. This school is located in a low middle class area of the city Initially the school had 400 students and 3 classrooms which forced some of the students to sit on the ground for instruction. The Rotary club Faisalabad built four additional classrooms, allowing the number of students to increase to 600. Both Rotary Clubs decided to join hands to write a matching grant to create a school that families could proudly send their daughters.
The school was refurbished by adding desks, ceiling fans, water coolers, computers, library books and cabinets for storing the books. The students were provided with uniforms and notebooks. The Faisalabad Club on their on expense repaired the road to give better access to the school during the rainy season.
The Madina Town school improvement will help reverse the high dropout rates for primary school age girls by improving the image of the school, thus inspiring the parents to allow their daughters to attend the local school. The matching grant of $22,725.00 was completed in February, 2010. |
